The traditional academic procession of the educators in their black gowns, along with the guest speaker for the evening, created an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation in the Universitas Geloofsentrum. For the past year those educators’ consistent determination to strive for excellence enabled the prize winners to reach their goals.

The Semester team met early in Term 1 for an exciting and informative session. New members were given the opportunity to feel what it is like to be a part of a team of driven and focused writers. During the session, they got to experience a slight taste of the working environment that the writers and editors operate under, which left many of them feeling ready to take on the job.

Founders’ Day: A day of remembrance

The annual Founder’s Day celebrations kicked off in different phases at different venues. The FET phase started at the chapel where Mr Van Wyk handed over Founders’ Day awards to Jasmine Ali, Boitshepo Mogapi, Tayla Dlodlo, Boitumelo Mtsatse, Bonolo Lehoko, Keabetswe Mokhuoa, Khanya Sidinele, and Illiana Stevens. The awards were handed over by the chairlady of the SMS Old Girls Association, Ms Dominique le Riche.

Chapel Choir sets the bar at their first concert

The SMS choir’s first official performance after the lockdown was a resounding success. News of the choir’s excellent performance at the choir festival, hosted by the Choral Celebration Network Foundation in co-operation with Oranje Meisieskool, spread like wildfire.

The sound of laughter can always be heard from the IT classroom on the second storey. Mr Elmar Henning, St Michael’s new Computer Literacy, IT and CAT teacher has recently joined the family. Having taught for twelve years at St Michaels’ brother school, St Andrew’s, he did not find it difficult to adjust to the eager and excited girls at St Michael’s.

Hockey: a force to be reckoned with

Dedication was evident in the SMS hockey teams’ pre-season preparation for 2022.

After a standstill caused by the Corona virus, the players were back and ready for action. The annual First-Team sleepover was the last of many arranged by former coach, Mr Braam van Wyk. The sleepover was fruitful as the ladies had the time to grow as a team and as individuals.

SMS netball is a happy place

Winning the first game of the season on home ground was a very important milestone for the First Netball Team. The game was nerve-racking as the teams were evenly matched in the first two quarters. However, the fitness levels of the opponents, Hoërskool Christiaan de Wet from Dewetsdorp, seemed to let them down in the final two quarters.
