Bloem Hawks bring back gold

DIMPHO MOTSIE

MUCH LIKE 2020, 2021 was doomed to be a very uncertain year, especially speaking from a sports point of view, but the SMS girls excelled magnificently before this year blocked their talents.

Earlier this year Amogelang Senyatsi (U.18), Itumeleng Semoli (U.16) and Vimbai Chituku (U.14) were selected to play for the Bloem Hawks Hockey Club with many other players from different schools in Bloemfontein.       The U.14 team is coached by Mrs Sulette Kotzee, a Gr 3 educator at St Michael’s.

They participated in the Hockey Junction Intercity Tournament which took place from 23 to 26 April in Johannesburg.  The Hawks played against many other teams from all over South Africa. ‘I was very nervous before the tournament because we were going to compete against teams from all over, not just Northern Cape like last year,’ says Amogelang.

All the uneasiness set the tone for a great end result. There were some ups and downs during the tournament:  some players were injured and the teams lost a game here and there, even though they celebrated many wins as well.

All three teams that the SMS girls played in, reached the final round of the tournament, won their respective matches, and brought home the cup. Phenomenal sportsmanship characterised their outstanding performance throughout.

The girls enjoyed a memorable tournament with great teammates and an excellent coach.
