Kaylen Simmons, captain of the SMS First Hockey Team, was a member of the Southern Free State U. 18A team that won both their matches against Northern Free State teams.
She also participated in the Bloem Hawks championship tournament where she played in the forward position and shot a few aerial goals for her team, the Western Panthers. Her team came third in the tournament. This opportunity came her way unexpectedly as she was not initially part of the team. Being scouted was a pleasant surprise. She welcomes new experiences and making new memories.
Kaylen hopes that the schools’ hockey league will revive in 2022, and that the All Girls Tournament, which is set to take place at Eunice next year, as well as the provincial hockey tour to Pietermaritzburg will not be jeopardised by the Corona virus.
She is looking forward to the First Team’s prospects because the players are dedicated and enthusiastic to be part of the team. She says, ‘Many of the players have a promising future. They are keen about the sport and are willing to give their best every day to improve as a team.’
