KWAME MOABI
IT ALL STARTED with an English oral. The topic was pollution. Rorisang Mocumi in Grade 5S2 decided to go all out. She designed a beautiful poster, wrote a convincing speech and motivated the learners in her class to sign a pledge, in which they promised to pick up 10 pieces of litter every Friday afternoon.
Her enthusiasm spread like wild fire and soon both Grade 5 classes were involved, as well as some of the Grade 6s.
After doing research about the topic, Rorisang was shocked to learn how bad littering is for the environment. She read more about the devastating effect of plastic specifically and, once again, became aware of the importance of ‘reduce, re-use and recycle’. At St Michael’s School alone, 75 bags of litter have to be removed every week.
She admits that her project is a big responsibility and that it will take courage to keep learners motivated, but she believes that she can do it with the help of her friends.
