Change the world for the better

SILVER LAUREATES were awarded to Head Girl, Emily Chikobvu and Deputy-Head, Kombe Chiwila at the Honour’s Dinner this year. The Laureate award is the highest award that can be bestowed by St Michael’s in order to honour learners who show exceptional effort in academics, neatness and diligence, participation in extra mural activities and strength of character.

Everyone present was captured by the remarkable wisdom of the words from the guest speaker: long-time teacher and former junior school head mistress, Mrs Virginia Scott. Mrs Scott started teaching English and Sesotho at St Michael’s in July 1985 after having taught at St Andrew’s for seven years. She addressed the invitees on the importance of and the fulfilment gained from service to others. ‘Teaching is a natural form of service,’ Mrs Scott told the girls in front of her. She spoke to them about how one person, in her lifetime, could bring about all sorts of change in the lives of those around them if only they cared enough to take action and create those changes.

In her speech, Mrs Scott did not focus on her own life story, as many guest speakers do, but instead she focused on advising the girls on how to live happier, more successful lives by helping others. She told the girls not to focus on making money, but rather to take pleasure in the things that they do.

The audience were also taken on a journey back into the past with anecdotes Dr Johan Cromhout told about the history of the school. They heard about Bishop Webb and Sister … whose influence led to the founding of the school. They also learnt about the history of the St Michael’s chapel bell which was donated in memory of little Alice Webb, who passed away during her family’s boat trip to Cape Town from Port Elizabeth due to sickness from the stormy waters.

A delicious meal and elegant entertainment from Dr Cromhout on the piano completed a lovely evening. May this Honours Dinner serve as an inspiration for the girls to work even harder this year!
