Rugby fever in South Africa peaked when SiyaKolisi and his team reached the quarter finals. On Friday before the World Cup Final, St Michael’s decided to get serious.
Almost all the girls wore green and those who did not know much about rugby were educated through You Tube videos. They watched videos about the Springbok Captain, Siya Kolisi, who represents many South Africans who come from a poor background. He became a national hero through hard work. Other popular players like Tendai Mtawarira, known as ‘Beast’, and Faf de Klerk, were introduced.
At 12:00 the girls met in the quad and formed the word BOKKE in enormous letters on the grass. After almost an hour in the sun, sweat was running down their backs, but the learners waited patiently for Mr Tim Jandrell’s drone to take the best photo possible. In the spirit of patriotism the learners started singing the National Anthem. Botshelo Dichaba said, ‘It was so hot that I felt as though I was going to start boiling, but I was so excited about showing my support to the Bokke.’
Ms Donice Donald and Ms Molateli initiated a Mexican Wave, which was great fun.
In the end the sweating and waiting was worth it: South Africa won the World Cup and the St Michael’s Bokke photo appeared in Volksblad.
