SALE OF WORK. These words spark many emotions in the St Michael’s family. This event is a living history; the Sale of Work was founded by the sisters of St Michael’s who used their hands to create products that they could sell to the community to raise funds for the school.
THE CACOPHONY of sounds, smells and colours of a classic market, met buyers when they entered the Jubilee Hall on Market Day. There were over 37 stalls, selling from delicious doughnuts and pop corn to books and jewellery.
Finding a replacement after Mrs Virginia Scott’s retirement was no easy task, considering that Mrs Scott had become one of the school’s most beloved teachers over the many years she spent at St Michael’s.
THE FATHER and Daughter V-Ball on 15 February was a splendid and colourful evening. Daddies in grand suits walking proudly beside their little princesses brought tears to many eyes.
MRS KAREN VENTER, the new Science teacher at Saint Michael’s, has an Honours degree in Plant Health as well as a Master’s degree in Plant Pathology – and obviously a PCGE. THE ORDINATION of Reverend Grant Trewern to the order of priest was a momentous and historic occasion, not only for the Church but for the school as well, as it marked the first time that an ordination took place at any school. It also coincided with the 145-year celebration of the school’s founding on Founder’s Day.
A MISSING PIECE in the puzzle of the history of St Michael’s School for Girls has recently been discovered by Dr Johan Cromhout. Inspired by an old girl’s inquiry and driven by his own passion for history, he started searching for the graves of the older nuns who had not been buried at the Cathedral.
St. Michael’s, despite all efforts, has never been a school that excels at sports. Despite a few small victories, the sporting standard of the school never seems to match the academic standard. One sport that perfectly fits that description, is swimming – and this fact has not gone unnoticed. Now, there is hope – there is currently a renewed focus on making swimming at St Michael’s a success.
The Semester, school newpaper of St Michael's, has a devoted editorial team that comprises journalists, photographers, coloumnists and cartoonists. The Semester aims to provide information, educate and entertain.
