When she rode for the first time at the age of 2, Alexia Augousti fell in love with the sport. Together with her horse Moonshine, or Moonie, or Moon for short, she competed in the SANESA Q4 2021. She competed in the dressage Special Needs Tests 3 and 4, as well as the Special Needs Performance Riding Class. She excelled in all three of her categories obtaining 3 red ribbons – which are for first place!
This year’s athletics day was a refreshing spritz of normality after so many events and competitions had been cancelled due to Covid-19. Regaining some house spirit raised the mood of the staff and learners.
Ms Jo-Nelke Swanepoel recently umpired the 2021 Senior Ladies’ Interprovincial Tournament in Cape Town. Blowing for both the semi-finals and the finals, she continued her tradition of blowing for both games ever since her first tournament in 2018.

28 players from St Michael’s took part in the Southern Free State squash tournament. For many of the learners, it was their first squash tournament. Although we were able to practise squash during Covid 19 as it is seen as a non-contact sport, this is the first official tournament in many months.
AFTER MANY WEEKS of hard work, the SMS swimmers were disappointed to hear that, due to Covid-19, the annual Midmar Mile would not be swum in the Midmar Dam near Howick in KwaZulu-Natal this year. Instead, it was turned into a virtual event. After being postponed from the original date, the weekend of 13 and 14 February, it was changed into an event of four days over two weeks namely 6, 7, 13, and 14 March 2021.
Because of Covid 19, there weren’t many hockey events or matches to report on, but in an interview with Mr Braam van Wyk Semester managed to get an inside scoop of the hockey scene at St Michael’s School. The principal is Mr Hockey at St Michael’s: his impressive resumé includes coaching the SA Schools First Team from 2009-2012 and being a trainer for the Senior Protea men’s and women’s teams.
MUCH LIKE 2020, 2021 was doomed to be a very uncertain year, especially speaking from a sports point of view, but the SMS girls excelled magnificently before this year blocked their talents.
