Father Grant’s ordination in SMS Chapel momentous and historic

THE ORDINATION of Reverend Grant Trewern to the order of priest was a momentous and historic occasion, not only for the Church but for the school as well, as it marked the first time that an ordination took place at any school. It also coincided with the 145-year celebration of the school’s founding on Founder’s Day.

40 graves link past and present

A MISSING PIECE in the puzzle of the history of St Michael’s School for Girls has recently been discovered by Dr Johan Cromhout. Inspired by an old girl’s inquiry and driven by his own passion for history, he started searching for the graves of the older nuns who had not been buried at the Cathedral.

Get ready for a comeback

St. Michael’s, despite all efforts, has never been a school that excels at sports. Despite a few small victories, the sporting standard of the school never seems to match the academic standard. One sport that perfectly fits that description, is swimming – and this fact has not gone unnoticed. Now, there is hope – there is currently a renewed focus on making swimming at St Michael’s a success.

Sportsmanship, teamwork and camaraderie the ultimate winners at the 2016 All Girls’ Festival

LA ROCHELLE GHS and Paarl GHS were the co-hosts of the 20th annual National All Girls’ Schools’ Sport and Cultural Festival, which took place from 1 – 4 May in Paarl. The Festival was attended by 22 girls’ schools from across the country and 1 300 girls, educators, and parents were expected to visit the town.

Netball goes from strength to strength

Manu Kifuabala added vigour to the Saint Michael’s netball season when she was selected to play wing attack for the U.17A Free State Netball Team. She is also the captain of the St Michael’s First Netball Team where she has played n different positions. Manu has an amazing ability to read and direct the game and to get the ball to the goal circle.

Marked improvement in First Hockey Team performance

‘SAINTS ON 3 –  1, 2 ,3 … SAINTS!’ This chant immediately puts the First Team in match mode. The team strive to maximise their mental strength and physical endurance and to cultivate patience – not only with their teammates but also with themselves. As Mr Van Wyk says, ‘Rome was not built in a day’.

Star participation results in achievement

OF THE 32 SENIOR ATHLETES who represented St Michael’s at the Southern Free State Athletics meeting, eleven athletes qualified for the Free State Championships. Nobiel Kifuabala walked away with a bronze medal for U 17 high jump and Gabriella Marais obtained a fourth position in the U16 100m.

Popcorn, movie, action…

THE SMELL OF POPCORN was prominent in the air. So was the smell of rain but that did not stop the excitement that was radiated by everyone there. It felt like stepping into a time capsule transporting you back to 1933 right into a retro drive-in movie evening with the big screen placed in the centre of the quad, children running around and people sitting on blankets on the grass.

Change starts with you

IT ALL STARTED with an English oral. The topic was pollution. Rorisang Mocumi in Grade 5S2 decided to go all out. She designed a beautiful poster, wrote a convincing speech and motivated the learners in her class to sign a pledge, in which they promised to pick up 10 pieces of litter every Friday afternoon.
