Class of 2022 – their wings have unfolded

The matrics recently attended a team-building session organised by the St Michael’s Staff Management Team. The session included various activities such as tug-of-war, building (infamous) marshmallow towers and playing Charades. Tug-of-war might just seem like forcefully tugging on a rope until your hands give in. However, it taught the learners that sometimes in life, it is crucial to take a step back and assess a situation before jumping right into it and that team work can only be effective if everyone is working together and not against one another.

When playing Charades, many participants merely ‘flopped’ around in the hope that their team members would be able to guess which animals they were portraying. This activity tested the ability of the ladies to stop and listen to one another to achieve a final goal.

The team-building session served as an opportunity for the ladies to see things from other people’s point of view and to understand that the Grade functions as a body and each learner has a part to play.

Many bright brains worked together to complete the different activities. Probably the most challenging activity of all was building a tower with spaghetti and marshmallows. Some decided that eating the building materials was a better solution! That they had found themselves in a sticky situation when building these towers was evident from what their hands looked like after using marshmallows as glue.

The Class of 2022 wants to stand out because of the united front they form. Matric sometimes seems like a never-ending tunnel or a rollercoaster of emotions. The strong bond between the Matrics, as well as the bond they share with their teachers, acts as a guiding light that makes the journey to the end of the tunnel a lot more bearable and memorable.

Mrs Melanie Schoeman said that interacting with the matrics was an uplifting and humbling experience for the staff. They trust that the message behind the activities will not only equip the matrics for the second half of the year, but also that it will remain with them as they live the future.
