It is almost impossible to put into words the number of curved balls 2020 has thrown our way. The past nine months have felt like an eternity – one looks back at March and wonders how we’re still in the same year.

The First Hockey Team beat Framesby High 5 – 0 at the Greg Beling tournament. The festival was held in East London in March. It was the first time a St Michael’s team participated in the tournament, which heightened the excitement about the event.
Our past and heritage remind us we are not orphans, but we are heirs of a great inheritance. We have a grand “his-story.” And we are part of a long, on-going story. We need to keep alive the stories, for they, in a real sense, keep us alive. We are what we remember.
The termly SMS cultural evening, which aims to promote the sisterhood between ladies, took an interesting twist this term. Instead of houses competing against one another to earn points for the Queen Cup (awarded at the end of the year to the house that has the most points), grades competed this time.
Semester recently conducted a virtual interview with Professor Felicity Burt of the Department of Virology from the University of Free State. She shared some valuable insights for school learners about the Corona virus and the prevention of its spread.
At the beginning of the Term 1 Exeat weekend, a group of wide-eyed, super-excited SMS swimmers departed for the annual highlight for swimmers – the Midmar Mile. It is the world’s largest open-water swimming event that attracted over 13 000 entries this year.
‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.’ This was surely the thought running through every staff member’s mind when the theme of the annual Welcome Back function at Amanzi was announced.
The theme of this year’s Valentine’s Ball was the Phantom of the Opera. Learners were encouraged to dress according to the theme. Many ladies were dressed very elegantly and looked stunning!
The first Honours Dinner at St Michael’s was held in the ’90s. Initially there were two separate Honours Dinners, one for academic and one for sports achievements. It was then decided to combine into one event to honour, thank and congratulate learners who have excelled.

People use social media to voice their thoughts, highlight problems, and enlighten others.
