Year: 2020

Oh Jerusalema!

Oh Jerusalema, took the world by storm. At this point, every South African knows this simple, yet challenging dance. The song brought our school even closer together. Mr Van Wyk made the exciting proposal that every grade comes up with their own dance to this song. It was a great chance for everyone to escape from the reality of COVID-19 and have fun together. RCL members take oath for St Michael’s

Under normal circumstances, the induction of the newly elected proctor body, where the current matric class passes on their role as leaders of the school to the next matric class, forms part of the Valedictory Service. This year, in order to accommodate social distancing, the induction was a separate service, attended only by the Grade Elevens, the RCL members of lower grades and their parents. In spite of this, the occasion still proved to be an enjoyable and meaningful one.

We matter, we learn, we love

Black Lives Matter is a movement that has swept its way through the world following the unjust death of George Floyd due to police brutality by the Minneapolis police in America and it swiftly made its way to South Africa and to St Michael’s.Black Lives Matter is a movement that has swept its way through the world following the unjust death of George Floyd due to police brutality by the Minneapolis police in America and it swiftly made its way to South Africa and to St Michael’s.

A Bright Future awaits St Michael’s in 2021

On Friday the Representative Council of Learners (RCL) for 2021 had its first meeting, a meeting that was bubbling with excitement as the proctors waited in anticipation to discuss the bright and beautiful future of St Michael’s.

Dr Johan Cromhout addresses invitees to Honours Dinner

For approximately the last 15 years I have been asked to perform the duty as Master of Ceremonies at the Honours Dinner of St Michael’s. This event takes place early in the year and is one of the school’s most prestigious functions. Learners from all disciplines are being honoured at this dinner where a guest speaker also gives an inspirational speech whereafter a mouth-watering meal is being served.

Lockdown long and tiring

The lockdown period was long, tiring and everyone was unsure about what was happening around them. This pandemic changed our lives forever, with many questions left unanswered: when will school open again; will we be able to visit friends and family soon; will we have to wear masks for ever and will life ever be the same again? The dates on which schools would open again, kept changing. No one was sure and online teaching and learning continued.

Not a single tear shed on first day

The grade ones arrived on their first day, smiling in their new uniforms ready to start “big school” and to test their new playground. 15 Janury was the day the Grade 1 teachers would start molding these…into the leaders of 2031, where they will make the world a better place.
