Grade 8s warmly welcomed

A heart-warming Basher Ceremony with their skivvy mistresses launched the Grade 8s into their high-school career. In the homily, Reverend Trewern spoke encouraging words of wisdom to the Grade 8s. He believed that they were ready for high school despite it being said to be difficult and that they had done well so far. He shared the phrase ‘Deus lux mea est’, which means ‘God is my light’ with them.

Speech Night celebrates excellence

The traditional academic procession of the educators in their black gowns, along with the guest speaker for the evening, created an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation in the Universitas Geloofsentrum. For the past year those educators had worked overtime to complete the curriculum. Their consistent determination to strive for excellence enabled the prize winners to reach their goals.

2022 leaders ready for action

The atmosphere was tense as each grade took turns to listen to the Grade 11 manifestos in the Chapel. The learners in the audience sat expectantly; the only sounds that could be heard were the voice of the speaker and the footsteps as one speaker exited and the next one entered.

Teachers our Covid-19 warriors!

On Wednesday 25 June, after waiting in the sun for hours, teachers and support staff eventually received their Covid-19 vaccines at the University of the Free State. Vaccination will definitely give teachers, learners, and their families more peace of mind. However, Covid-19 still lingers and now, more than ever, it’s urgent that we comply with the laws set in place to protect all of us. This, unfortunately, is the new norm and it will be for a while longer.

Stockings, sore muscles and candle wax – that’s what ‘skivvies’ are made of

The air smelled of wet grass and burning candles at this year’s Basher ceremony. Although the ceremony couldn’t take place in the chapel as always, there was the same spirit in the air. There were thick clouds in the sky; even the rain was excited to see the event. The hot candle wax dripped onto the girls’ dresses and fingers, but nothing could dampen the spirit.

Cheers to 100 years!

This year, St Michael’s celebrated her100th annual Speech Night, an award ceremony that commemorates academic, sporting, and cultural excellence. However, due to the Corona virus, things were a bit different – what was once a Speech Night, became a Speech Day and what once was a cathedral filled to the brim with excited learners and proud parents, became an empty chapel with only one grade of recipients present at a time.

147 years commemorated

EARLY ON THE MORNING of Founders’ Day, different Grade groups met at different venues: Gr 7-9 started at the hockey fields and the Grade 10-12s assembled outside the chapel, while the Foundation Phase enjoyed their own programme with sack races, gg & spoon and balancing.
