A debating star is born

Five years ago, when a Grade Eight learner walked into Mrs Basson’s classroom to start participating in debating, nobody could have guessed where her talent would take her. Jessica Chuang, a matric learner and star debater at St Michael’s, will even feature on national television soon.

SAASTA team considers climate change

THE SOUTH AFRICA AGENCY FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ADVANCEMENT (SAASTA), in collaboration with the Harmony Mine Group, honoured top science learners from across the country during the September holidays. The SAASTA debaters, along with Astroquiz and Olympiad achievers in Life Science, Physical Science and Natural Science from all over South Africa, attended the event that took place at the CSIR’s International Convention Centre in Pretoria.

Senior Primary Choir sings in harmony

The Senior Primary Choir was especially busy this year. Their first important performance was ATKV Applous, where they were highly commended and obtained a silver certificate. They received an A at the Kunswedstryd later in the year.

It takes two (and tea) to tango

SHAKESPEARE wrote, ‘All is well that ends well.’ This was absolutely true for Spring Tea 2019, hosted by the Grade 6 girls.

Songs of Celebration glorifies God

ESTABLISHED AND CELEBRATED choirs added special lustre to this year’s Songs of Celebration that commemorated the 145th birthday of St Michael’s – the oldest Girls’ School south of the Orange River.

The Choir of the University of the Free State and its Alumni Voices, as well as the Eunice High School Choir sang what the program called called ‘the art of the prophets’ in Martin Luther’s words.  The Chapel Choir of St Michael’s, as well as the Senior and Junior Primary Choirs, also presented the audience with, what Luther had called, ‘magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.’ To hear the mass choir sing, gave everyone goose bumps.

St Michael’s goes global

Phakade Tshivhase (Grade 8) and Nomvula Letseleha (Grade 6) visited the United Kingdom with the Bloemfontein Children’s Choir. They went to Scotland and London. The highlight of their trip was visiting Buckingham Palace. The magnificent gardens, the sheer size and majesty of the building and especially the Change of the Guard were magical.

Chapel Choir sets the tone

The chapel choir has grown tremendously in 2019 – from 21 choristers in March to 72 at present. It owes its success story partly to the appointment of Ms Joanie Prinsloo during the first term.

Easy as π!

THE SOUTH AFRICAN INTERNATIONAL MATHEMATICS COMPETITION (SAIMC) held in Durban in August was attended by Yi-Xuan Wu, Tinya Chuang and Fiona Lee. Earlier in the year they competed in three elimination rounds against other young mathematicians from all over the Free State and Northern Cape to be selected for the team to participate in the SAIMC competition.

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don’t look even slightly believable.
